Perched on the slopes of Chomeiji Mountain overlooking Lake Biwa, this is the 31st temple on the Thirty-Three Temples of the Western Paradise (西国三十三所) pilgrimage route and an ancient temple with traditions tracing back to Prince Shotoku (聖徳太子). A 808-step stone stairway leads from the base to the main hall, where important cultural properties including the main hall and three-story pagoda stand in striking arrangement. The sight of the vermillion pagoda reflected against Lake Biwa's azure waters is truly spectacular, inviting a deep breath of the crisp air. True to its name, it is known for its benefits of long life and vitality, drawing countless pilgrims wishing for health and longevity. The view of Lake Biwa and distant mountains from the temple grounds will refresh your spirit after a day of indulging in sweets.
Tips
Driving allows you to ascend to a parking lot halfway up the mountain, from which the main hall is only about 100 steps away, significantly easing the climb. By bus from JR Omihachiman Station (JR近江八幡駅), take the Chomeiji Temple-bound bus to the terminal and climb the 808 steps from the base. The steps have considerable rise, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a backpack with your hands free. Temple seals (goshuin) are available at the receipt office near the main hall.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 1 hour. Visiting between 2 and 3 p.m., when afternoon light makes Lake Biwa shimmer, is most beautiful.
