About this spot

Formally known as Toyouke-no-Okami Shrine, this sacred shrine with approximately 1,500 years of history enshrines Toyouke-no-Okami, guardian deity of food, clothing, shelter, and industry, as well as the meals of Amaterasu Omikami. The traditional pilgrimage route is 'Outer Shrine first, Inner Shrine second,' and your Ise pilgrimage begins here. The gravel approach, surrounded by towering cedar trees, offers crisp morning air that naturally straightens your posture as you walk. The grounds are relatively compact with minimal elevation change, making it easy for three generations—from small children to grandparents—to stroll leisurely. In addition to the main sanctuary, visits to the auxiliary shrines such as Wind Shrine, Earth Shrine, and Taka Shrine are recommended. Adjacent Sengukan Museum also offers insights into the Shikinen Sengu ceremony held every twenty years.

Tips

Excellent accessibility, approximately 5 minutes' walk straight from the approach from Ise Station (JR/Kintetsu). Left-side traffic is customary here (right-side at the Inner Shrine). Free parking is available but tends to get crowded on weekends, so public transportation is safer. The gravel path can be difficult to push a stroller on; a baby carrier is helpful for families with small children.
