Founded in 1707 (Hoei 4), Akafuku has over 300 years of history as a maker of traditional sweets. This flagship shop stands in an imposing structure along the Isuzu River in Oharai Town. Inside the shop, you can enjoy freshly made akafuku mochi accompanied by warm roasted tea. The three wave-like ridges marking the mochi are said to represent the clear currents of the Isuzu River; the tender mochi is beloved by visitors of all ages, from children to grandparents. Resting on a veranda or in a tatami room overlooking the Isuzu River soothes away the fatigue of a long day of walking. You can also observe the old-fashioned sight of a cauldron heating water inside the shop, and gift boxes are available for purchase on the spot. Savoring this moment by the river's babbling, as the traditional finish to an Ise pilgrimage, is truly special.
Tips
Located just beyond Okage Yokocho, along Oharai Town Street. Open from 5 a.m., so early hours are a good way to avoid crowds. Tatami seating is offered on a first-come, first-served basis; lines can form on weekend afternoons. Gift boxes have a short shelf life, so consider your recipient and schedule before purchasing.
