About this spot
This tourist destination spreads through the middle of Oharai Town, the gate district, just beyond the Uji Bridge of the Inner Shrine, with approximately 50 shops lining the streets. In this area, the streetscape of the Ise area from the Edo through Meiji periods has been recreated, and simply walking down the street lined with wooden buildings heightens the mood of travel. The famous Ise udon features soft noodles coated in rich tamari sauce, a delicate flavor that is easy for both small children and elderly visitors to enjoy. Food walk options abound with tekonezushi (hand-pressed sushi), Matsusaka beef skewers, and freshly fried croquettes. There is also a plaza echoing with taiko drum performances, a shop selling traditional toys, and maneki-neko (beckoning cat) shops—each family member is sure to find something they like in this area packed with the pleasures of an Ise pilgrimage.
Tips
Just a short walk from the Uji Bridge at the Inner Shrine. Lunch spots have lines during midday; the trick is to eat early, before 11 a.m., or after 2 p.m. Many food stalls accept cash only, so bring small change. The street is paved with stone and is passable with a stroller, but weekends get crowded—hold children's hands.
