Trek Along the Gorge Trail Where Famous Waterfalls Like Fudō and Senju Waterfalls Appear in Succession

A scenic spot representing Nabari City, Mie Prefecture, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. About 4 km of scenic trail is maintained along the Takigawa River, where the 'Five Waterfalls of Akame'—including Fudō Waterfall, Senju Waterfall, Nunobiki Waterfall, Ninaite Waterfall, and Biwa Waterfall—and countless other waterfalls of various sizes appear in succession. Deep green, moss-covered rocks, and water surfaces glistening in dappled sunlight create a world filled with negative ions. The gorge is said to be where Iga-ryu ninja trained, adding historic romance unique to this place. A complete round trip to the innermost falls takes about 3 hours, but if you turn back around Nunobiki Waterfall, you can cut the journey in half. It's wonderful how you can customize the course to suit both of your fitness levels and available time. The scenery changes with the seasons—fresh green, deep green, and autumn foliage—and is picturesque no matter when you visit. Walking enveloped in the sound of water is the ultimate refreshment.

Tips

From Akame Waterfall bus stop, it's just a short walk to the gorge entrance. Entry to the gorge is included with the admission ticket to the Japanese Giant Salamander Center (Akame Waterfall Aquarium). The trail features stone steps and slippery wet rocks, so non-slip shoes are essential. The round trip to the innermost Gankutsu Waterfall takes about 90 minutes one way; turning back at Nunobiki Waterfall shortens the round trip to about 1.5 hours. There are almost no shops or vending machines in the gorge, so bring water, and use the restroom at the entrance for peace of mind. The fall foliage season weekends get crowded, so starting early in the morning is recommended.
