About this spot

An ancient temple with Fudō Myōō (Acalanatha) as its principal deity, located near the entrance of Akame 48 Waterfalls. Legend has it that when the ascetic Yōgyōja was practicing in this area, Fudō Myōō appeared riding on a red-eyed ox—a tale that is said to be the origin of the place name 'Akame' (red eye). The temple grounds, a step away from the bustle of the gorge, echo with only the sound of flowing water, and the arrangement of stone steps, temple gate, and moss-covered stone lanterns evokes a quiet sense of travel atmosphere. The temple grounds feature an ancient weeping cherry tree said to be over 300 years old; in spring, it displays magnificent blossoms. After your waterfall walk, clasping your hands together with your companion to give thanks for a safe journey and good fortune is a unique way to experience this course. Visiting is free, so you can stop by without hesitation.

Tips

Just a short walk from Akame Waterfall bus stop, located right before the gorge entrance, making it convenient to visit on the way to or from the waterfall walk. Entry is free. Stone steps line the temple grounds, so be careful of your footing after a tiring waterfall walk. During spring's weeping cherry blossom season, the grounds fill with visitors; if you want to experience the quiet atmosphere, timing your visit slightly differently is a good strategy.

Best time to visit

Takes about 40 minutes. Best visited in the early afternoon after finishing the waterfall walk, taking a rest while offering prayers in the quiet temple grounds.
