The residential site of the Nabari Tōdō Family, who ruled Nabari during the Edo Period, designated as a Mie Prefecture Historic Site. The Nabari Tōdō Family descended from Takayoshi, adopted son of Tōdō Takatori, renowned as a master castle builder. The buildings that remain today are part of the manor rebuilt after the great Nabari fire of 1710. You can view up close the formal reception chambers with writing rooms and ceremonial halls, representing the formal rank of daimyo-class nobility, featuring shoin-zukuri (traditional residential architecture) style. The refined Momoyama-period design and the craftsmanship of the decorative panels above the doorways are impressive; sitting on the tatami-matted chambers and gazing at the garden evokes the quiet presence of Edo Period samurai life. The surrounding area retains remnants of castle town character, including the Former Hosokawa Residence (Yanase Inn) and a temple district, making a post-visit stroll through the neighborhood equally enjoyable. A sophisticated way to conclude your day, savoring the subtly different charm of history compared to the natural beauty of the gorge.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from the west exit of Kintetsu Nabari Station, passing through the old town streets; if driving, use nearby parking areas. The manor is closed Mondays and Thursdays (or the following day if a holiday falls on these days), so check opening dates before your visit. Viewing requires removing your shoes and entering the tatami chambers. Combining this with a castle town walk through the nearby temple district and Yanase Inn is recommended.
