About this spot

A scenic spot featuring towering rock cliffs carved by the rough waves of Kumano-nada over many years, registered as part of the World Heritage site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." The main highlight is the overwhelmingly massive cave "Sennjo-shiki" (Thousand Tatami Mats). Standing beneath the rock face honeycombed with erosion, you'll be left speechless by nature's sculptural power. An approximately 1 km promenade runs along the coast, with oddly-shaped rocks and cliffs bearing names like Oni-no-mihiriba and Inu-modori appearing one after another. As you walk, the sense of constantly discovering new scenic vistas is exhilarating. The thrill of treading on rocks right at the water's edge combined with the striking contrast between rocks and sea—every frame is picture-perfect. Friends who love spectacular views are guaranteed to be excited. The Oni-ga-shiro Center at the entrance has shops and dining options, making it the perfect starting point for your World Heritage drive.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from JR Kumano Station, with free parking at Oni-ga-shiro Center. The promenade follows rocky terrain at the waterline, so non-slip sneakers are essential. The path may close during high waves or after storms, so check the opening status before you go. The round trip to Sennjo-shiki takes about 30-40 minutes. Use the restrooms and shops at the center beforehand.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1.5 hours total. Morning is best when the morning light makes the rock faces shine
