A sand and gravel beach forming an arc over approximately 22 kilometers from Kumano City to Kihoku Town—Japan's longest. Part of the World Heritage site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range," it was also the "Hama Kaido" pilgrimage route walked by countless pilgrims to Kumano. Smooth, rounded pebbles stretch endlessly, and the contrast with the vast blue expanse of Kumano-nada filling your entire view is breathtaking. The gentle sound of pebbles clattering as the waves recede is soothing, and simply walking melts your cares away. Searching for beautifully colored or patterned "Mihama pebbles" while strolling is another delight. Posing for photos with friends against the shimmering horizon in the afternoon light will produce your trip's best shots.
Tips
Right in front of Shishi-iwa and Hana-no-iwaya Shrine, easily accessible on foot from parking areas like Michi-no-Eki "Kumano-Hana-no-iwaya." Swimming is prohibited as the beach drops suddenly deep with strong waves—limit yourselves to strolls at the water's edge. The pebble beach shifts under your feet more than expected, so wear comfortable shoes. There's no shade, so bring a hat and water.
