About this spot

A sacred site recorded as "Hana-no-iwaya" in the Nihon Shoki, said to be Japan's oldest. According to tradition, Izanami-no-Mikoto, mother of the gods, is interred here. Rather than a shrine building, the approximately 45-meter-high massive rock itself serves as the divine body—a primordial form of faith still alive today. Walking through a wooded approach and standing before the massive rock, you'll feel the quiet power that has moved people to pray at this stone since ancient times. During the biennial "Omuna-kake Shinjin" ceremony (February 2 and October 2), a great rope about 170 meters long is strung from the rock's peak to Shichiri-mihama, creating a magnificent sight billowing in the wind. At the entrance's "Omuna Teashop," you can enjoy light refreshments like dango sweets made with ancient grain varieties—perfect for a break during your drive.

Tips

Located along Route 42, about 5 minutes by car from JR Kumano Station; about a 10-minute walk from Shishi-iwa. You can use the free parking at the adjacent Michi-no-Eki "Kumano-Hana-no-iwaya." The approach from the entrance to the rock is mostly flat and easy to walk, taking about 15 minutes if just paying respects. Take your time to collect a shrine stamp and rest at the teashop.

Approximately 45 minutes. Morning, with dappled light filtering through the trees on the approach, is most refreshing
