View the Handwritten Materials of National Scholar Motoori Norinaga, Author of the "Kojiki Preface," and Tour the Former Residence "Suzuya"

About this spot

A memorial hall dedicated to the life and scholarship of Motoori Norinaga, the Edo-period National Scholar who spent 35 years completing the "Kojiki Preface." Located within the Matsusaka Castle ruins, it houses and displays precious materials including Norinaga's handwritten manuscripts, diaries, and personal possessions—some designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Adjacent to the hall is "Suzuya," the former residence where Norinaga lived from age 12, which has been moved and preserved within the castle grounds. You can view up close the study where he devoted himself to classical research. Norinaga's life—working as a physician by day while pursuing scholarship at night—will inspire not only adults but also elementary and middle school students conducting research projects. The thoughtful display commentary makes this a standout spot where history-loving grandparents can shine as guides.

Tips

Located within the Matsusaka Castle grounds, you can walk directly to it from the castle stroll. Note that the facility is closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a holiday). Admission includes viewing of the former residence "Suzuya," and the exhibition rooms are compact, so three generations can tour it comfortably. It's reassuring to have cash ready for the ticketing window.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Visiting around 10 AM after exploring the castle ruins offers a quiet atmosphere for enjoying the exhibits at leisure.
