The ruins of a renowned castle built by the Sengoku warlord Ujisato Gamo in 1588, designated as a National Historic Site and selected as one of Japan's "100 Famous Castles." Though the main tower no longer remains, the massive natural stone walls built from carefully stacked unworked stones have survived in nearly complete condition, and their grandeur up close will leave you in awe. Standing atop the stone walls, you can take in panoramic views of Matsusaka's castle town and the mountains of Ise—a sight that elicits delighted exclamations from grandparents down to grandchildren. Now developed as a public park, it displays beautiful seasonal colors: cherry blossoms and wisteria in spring, and ginkgo in autumn. Within the castle grounds, you'll also find the Motoori Norinaga Memorial Hall and the Historical and Folklore Museum, making this the perfect starting point for a stroll through prosperous Matsusaka.

Tips

About a 15-minute walk from JR/Kintetsu Matsusaka Station. Open to the public as a park with free admission. Since many sections of the stone walls lack guardrails and the footing is uneven, small children should always hold hands and wear sturdy walking shoes. The grounds have many slopes and stone steps, so a baby carrier is more practical than a stroller. It's a good idea to bring drinks purchased from around the station.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Early morning around 9:30 AM, when it's cooler, is ideal for climbing the stone walls, with fewer crowds so you can enjoy the views peacefully.
