An ancient Buddhist temple of the Shingon sect said to have been founded in the Nara period, revered by the name "Nyu Daishi" due to its connection to the monk Kobo Daishi. Unlike the male-only Mount Koya, this temple welcomed women and earned the affectionate name "Female Mount Koya," receiving the prayers of people for centuries. Passing through the imposing Nio Gate, the temple grounds open into a serene landscape where buildings are surrounded by greenery, and climbing the stone steps leads to the Daishi Hall with a peaceful view of the Niu countryside. The neighboring Nyu Shrine completes the spiritual experience, allowing visitors to feel the deep history rooted in this land. The quiet grounds are perfect for families with children, offering a peaceful moment to center yourself amid your gourmet adventures.

Tips

Admission is free, with a parking lot for visitors near the temple. Small children should hold hands while climbing the stone steps to the Daishi Hall. Stroller accessibility is limited to the flat areas around the Nio Gate and main hall. Weekday visits during daytime hours offer the quietest atmosphere. The verdant grounds have plenty of shade even in summer, making walking comfortable.
