Tour the Interior of an Edo Period Townhouse and Connect with Sekijuku's History and Way of Life
About this spot
Located in the middle of the townscape of Sekijuku (関宿), the 47th post station on the Tokaido Road, this museum is housed in an actual townhouse built during the late Edo period. You can see up close the distinctive architecture of the townhouse, including the doma (earthen floor), mise no ma (shop floor), and hako kaidan (box stairs). Displays of historical materials about Sekijuku and the daily-life implements of the era bring the life of the post station vividly to life. A unique pleasure of this public townhouse facility is the view of the old Tokaido street from the latticed windows on the second floor—the stretch of tiled roofs below provides a rare shooting spot viewable from above. With approximately 1.8 km of old townhouses remaining in this nationally designated Important Traditional Building Preservation District, stopping here at the start of your walk will greatly enhance what you see as you explore the town.
Tips
Approximately 10-minute walk from Seki Station on the JR Kansai Main Line; located in the middle of the Sekijuku townscape. By car, the free sightseeing parking lot near the townscape is convenient. A joint admission ticket is available with the Sekijuku Hatago Tamaya Historical Museum, so check at the reception if visiting both. Closed Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a holiday). Since you must remove your shoes indoors, wearing easy-to-remove footwear will make things smoother.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 45 minutes. Early morning, right after opening, is quiet, and you can also enjoy the soft morning light that bathes the townscape.
