This museum opens the restored building of Tamaya, a grand inn that epitomized Sekijuku and was said to be "the place to stay in Seki, if not Tsuruyaor Tamaya." The front desk, guest rooms, lavishly appointed inner chambers, and storehouse remain in their original state. Through displays of tableware and tools used at the inn and recreations of meals served to travelers, the reality of Edo-period travel comes alive. Displays of Hiroshige woodblock prints are another highlight. The soft light filtering through the lattice work and the lustrous sheen of polished wood create an atmosphere so evocative that friends who love photography won't be able to resist snapping away. Walking through while imagining yourself as an Edo-era traveler will bring your post-town stroll experience to its peak.
Tips
Just a short walk from the Seki Machinarami Museum along the old post road. Save money with a joint admission ticket to both museums. The building's original structure means there are steps and steep stairs, so watch your footing. Closed Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a holiday). The interior is somewhat dim, so when taking photos, smartphone night mode or a bright lens will be helpful.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 45 minutes. The morning hours are relatively uncrowded, and the light filtering through the lattice also photographs beautifully.
