Pay Respects to Japan's Oldest Jizo Bodhisattva at This Ancient Temple with Ties to the Monk Ikkyu

This ancient temple is said to have been founded by the Buddhist priest Gyoki during the 13th year of the Tenpyo era (741 CE), and its principal image—the Jizo Bodhisattva—is said to be Japan's oldest. Known as "Seki no Ojizosan" (the Jizo of Seki), it was cherished by travelers passing along the Tokaido as they prayed for safe passage. It became so widely known that it was even mentioned in folk songs such as "Dress Seki's Jizo in a maiden's robe." The temple is unique in having a record of the priest Ikkyu conducting its eye-opening ceremony. The main hall, the Aizendo (Love Immortal Hall), and the bell tower are designated as Important Cultural Properties, and the temple complex stands majestically facing the old post road as a symbol of Sekijuku. The streets in front of the gate are lined with traditional houses, and a leisurely stroll with camera in hand will reveal one photogenic scene after another.

Tips

Approximately 10-minute walk from Seki Station; located on the western side of the Sekijuku townscape. The temple grounds are open to the public for worship. To view the interior of the main hall, an attendant is required; check on-site if interested. The old Tokaido is a living street with vehicle traffic, so be mindful of your surroundings when photographing. Restaurants and rest areas are scattered around the gate, making lunch plans convenient afterward.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 45 minutes. Visiting before lunch means fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere. Going straight to lunch at a nearby restaurant is efficient.
