Walk the Charerenka Trail to the Cape's Tip; 300-Degree Shakotan Blue Panorama

About this spot

A sharply jutting cape at the tip of Shakotan Peninsula, one of Hokkaido's most spectacular scenic spots. After passing through the "Women-Prohibited Gate" at the parking lot, walk the 770-meter tree-lined trail "Charerenka Path" along the ridge for 20 to 30 minutes. At the end of this thrilling path where the deep indigo sea drops away on both sides, the white Kamui Cape Lighthouse and Kamui Rock rising from the sea await. The view from the tip is such a sweeping 300-degree panorama that the horizon appears curved, and the sea spreading below is a mesmerizing Shakotan Blue. The legend of the Ainu maiden Charerenka's tragic love becoming Kamui Rock takes on a ring of truth before this wild yet beautiful scenery. The popular blue soft-serve ice cream at the parking lot shop makes a perfect reward after completing the walk.

Tips

About 25 minutes by car from Shimotai Beach; parking is free. The trail features continuous ups and downs, so sneakers are essential. Wind is often very strong here, so prepare a jacket and secure your hat. The gate may close due to severe weather or poor conditions, and opening hours vary by season, so confirm the access status on the day of your visit.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1.5 hours required (including round-trip walking). For vibrant blue, visit during daytime; for dramatic lighting, go late afternoon.
