A symbol of Hakodate Bay Area, this is a complex of commercial facilities housed in historic red brick commercial warehouses from the Meiji period. Buildings like "BAY Hakodate," "Mori Imported Goods Museum," and "Hakodate History Plaza" gather shops selling uniquely Hakodate items such as miscellaneous goods, sweets, glassware, and music boxes—making for endless souvenir hunting. The red brick buildings lined along the canal and the harbor views are picturesque just from walking through, and waterfront restaurants and cafes are ideal for lunch. The substantial warehouses, which developed alongside Hakodate Port, retain strong traces of the prosperous trading era. Located near Hakodate Asaichi market with an easy harbor-side walk, this is the perfect spot to slowly savor the daytime atmosphere of the bay area.
Tips
About 15 minutes walk from Hakodate Asaichi along the harbor, or about 5 minutes walk from Juujigai streetcar stop if taking the streetcar. Entry to the facilities is free. Restaurants inside can be crowded during lunch hours, so arriving early or coming at off-peak times is recommended. The harbor-side can be windy, so bringing a light jacket is comfortable.
Best time to visit
Allow about 2 hours. Late morning through early afternoon is ideal for combining shopping and lunch.
