Hakodate's Blue Harbor Beyond a Stone-Paved Slope—Hakodate's Iconic Photo Spot
About this spot
Among the many slopes in Motomachi, this stone-paved slope is known as representing Hakodate's signature scenery. As you climb the straight slope and turn back, Hakodate Bay spreads out at the end of the street, and you can see straight through to the Aomori-Hakodate Ferry Memorial Museum Mashu Maru (青函連絡船記念館摩周丸) moored there—a composition that looks exactly like a Hakodate postcard. The slope is famous for being a location for many commercials and movie shoots, and you'll constantly see travelers with cameras. The name comes from the Hakodate Hachiman Shrine that once stood at the top of the slope. Tree-lined streets and Western-style buildings flank both sides, and the slope is picturesque from any point, so take your time climbing up and down while searching for your best vantage point together.
Tips
About 5 minutes walk from Mori Red Brick Warehouse, or about 2 minutes walk from Suehiro-cho streetcar stop. The slope has a steep grade, so wear comfortable walking shoes. It's an active road with traffic, so be careful not to step too far into the roadway when photographing.
Best time to visit
Allow 30 to 45 minutes. In the afternoon, the light hits the bay side, making for beautiful photographs.
