"Banei horse racing," where one-ton-class draft horses pull heavy iron sleds, cross two slopes, and race down a 200-meter straight course, is held only at Obihiro Racetrack in the world. Rooted in the strength tests of draft horses from the pioneering era, it emphasizes strength and endurance rather than speed. The races move at a walking pace, allowing spectators to move alongside the horses along the course fence, experiencing the sound of hoofbeats kicking sand and the jockey's shouts up close. The grounds include a "Petting Animal Zoo" where you can interact with horses and "Tokachi Mura," which gathers local Tokachi products—you won't be bored between races. Though it's horse racing, it attracts many families and tourists, making it an Obihiro tourist spot where grandchildren and grandparents alike can cheer together.

Tips

About 10 minutes by bus from JR Obihiro Station; if driving, free parking is available. Banei horse racing is held on a year-round weekend-focused schedule, so check the official website for race dates and post times before your visit. Admission is just 100 yen. Indoor viewing seats are available, so on hot or cold days, grandparents can watch comfortably indoors.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours total. Early morning races are relatively less crowded, making it easier to watch from the fence-side seating.
