Mini-Trekking to Furepe Waterfall "Maiden's Tears," Through Grassland and Forest
About this spot
Located about 5 minutes by car from Utoro city center toward Shiretoko Five Lakes, at the gateway to Shiretoko National Park, this is an information hub for natural field knowledge. The facility disseminates field information and provides lectures, plus offers popular video screenings (paid) on a large screen showcasing Shiretoko's four seasons and pristine nature. But what absolutely cannot be missed is the Furepe Waterfall walking trail starting from this center. Through grassland and forest, approximately 1 km one-way, groundwater drips like tears from a cliff—affectionately called "Maiden's Tears." From the observation platform, you can see the waterfall, the azure Sea of Okhotsk, and seabirds soaring along the cliff all at once. Along the way, you'll often encounter Hokkaido sika deer, and this walking path epitomizes Shiretoko's character.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Utoro city center; free parking is available. The Furepe Waterfall trail is a casual round-trip of about 2 km taking 40–60 minutes, but as it's brown bear habitat, check the latest information at the center before starting, and ring a bear bell while walking. The facility offers long boots and binoculars for rent, plus a café and shop on-site.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes (including round-trip trail walk). Mid-morning in good daylight is easiest for walking, and the blue of the Sea of Okhotsk appears more vivid.
