The elevated wooden boardwalk (approximately 1.6 km round-trip) is easy for anyone to walk, and with electric fencing installed, you can reach Lake One without worrying about bears. From the observation deck, a grand panorama unfolds of the Shiretoko mountain range and the Sea of Okhotsk beyond the lake. The ground walking trail encompassing all five lakes is more serious, sometimes requiring a lecture or guided tour participation depending on season; the time spent walking amid the primeval forest is extraordinary. On calm, windless days, the lake surface mirrors sky and mountains perfectly, and you'll find your shutter hand never stops clicking at every picturesque scene.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from Shiretoko Nature Center; parking is paid (500 yen for regular cars). The elevated boardwalk is free and requires no reservation, but the ground walking trail sometimes requires a lecture at Shiretoko Five Lakes Field House (paid) or guided tour participation depending on season, so check opening conditions in advance. Insect repellent, drinking water, and comfortable walking shoes are essential.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. Calm wind conditions show beautiful reflections on the lake surface. If walking the ground trail, arrive in early afternoon.
