Breakfast with the Local Specialty 'Nokkegdon'—Build Your Own Seafood Rice Bowl
About this spot
Located a five-minute walk from Aomori Station, this is the citizens' kitchen and the birthplace of 'Aomori Nokkegdon.' Purchase a meal ticket at the information desk in the hall, receive your bowl of rice, then walk around visiting fresh fish shops and prepared food stalls to place your choice of toppings one at a time—tuna, scallops, salmon, egg omelet, and more. Even with the same meal ticket, the donburi's appearance changes completely depending on which ingredients you choose, so comparing each other's bowls with your partner is part of the fun. Established in Showa 44 (1969), this historic market is renowned for the friendly interactions with shop staff, which are part of the authentic charm. When a shopkeeper says, 'These were just caught this morning,' you'll find yourself adding more toppings before you know it, launching your Aomori morning filled with vibrant energy.
Tips
Five-minute walk from Aomori Station. Purchase meal tickets at the information desk. Closed Tuesdays, so plan accordingly. Morning is when the market bustles most, with the widest selection of popular items early in the day. The passages are somewhat narrow, so storing large luggage at the station's coin lockers will let you browse freely.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Right after opening to mid-morning offers the best selection and liveliest atmosphere. Recommended for breakfast.
