Pray for Safe Travels at Utou Shrine, Said to Be the Birthplace of Aomori City

This ancient shrine, read as 'Utou-jinja,' is nestled in the heart of Aomori City. It is said to be the tutelary shrine from when Aomori was called Utou Village, and a marker here reads 'Birthplace of Aomori City'—making it the symbolic origin of the town. According to tradition, it was founded during the reign of Emperor Inkyo and lends its name to the Noh play 'Utou.' One step inside the sanctuary, and you leave the bustle of surrounding office buildings behind. The greenery surrounding the pond known as Utou-nu creates a serene atmosphere. The bridge painted vermillion red and the shrine building reflected in the water form a picturesque scene. After paying your respects, a leisurely walk around the pond is highly recommended. Located at the endpoint of the Oshu Kaido (historic route), this shrine is the perfect place to pause and give thanks at a turning point in your journey.

Tips

Just a five-minute walk from Aomori Gyosen Center, easily reached on a post-breakfast stroll. Visits to the sanctuary are free and open to the public. Ema (prayer plaques) and oshuin (shrine stamps) are available at the shrine office. Some areas around Utou-nu have unpaved ground, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain.
