Known as the northernmost aquarium on Honshu, this is Aomori Prefecture's leading place to learn about the sea. In the 15-meter tunnel tank, which recreates the underwater world of Mutsu Bay, you can walk through while looking up at scallop farming scenes and schools of fish, giving the feeling of strolling through the sea itself. The dolphin performance held in the pool at the Dolphin House is the aquarium's signature attraction, featuring dynamic jumps set to the sound of Tsugaru music that captivate children and adults alike. The aquarium also packs in other highlights such as Aomori's river and sea creatures, penguins, and seals, and its compact layout makes it easy to get around even with small children in tow. The touch pool, where you can touch starfish and other creatures, is also popular and greatly expands children's interest in marine life.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk from Asamushi-Onsen Station on the Aoimori Railway; by car, it's close to the Aomori Expressway and has free parking. The dolphin performance runs a few times a day, so it's best to check the schedule right when you enter and plan your route around it. The aquarium is stroller-friendly and has a nursing room and diaper-changing facilities.
Best time to visit
About 2 hours. It's relatively uncrowded in the morning right after opening, making it easier to get a seat for the dolphin performance
