One of the Tsutanana (seven marshes of Tsuta), Tsuta Marsh is the largest and most well-known among them. From the wooden observation deck built near the marsh's shore, the water surface becomes mirror-like when the wind dies down, reflecting both the beech forest and sky perfectly. The sight of autumn foliage ignited by the early morning sun, turning the entire water surface crimson red—known as "Burning Tsuta Marsh"—draws photographers from across the nation, but the quiet beauty of the fresh greenery or deep green summer is equally extraordinary. Surrounding the area is a roughly 2.9-kilometer boardwalk called "The Small Path Around the Marshes" connecting 6 of the Tsutanana, allowing you to walk through the pristine beech forest. After a day of stringing together spectacular vistas like beads, this is the perfect spot to slowly savor the quiet beauty of the water landscape as the day concludes.
Tips
About 20 minutes by car from Suiren Marsh; from the parking area near Tsuta Hot Spring, it's about a 10-minute walk on the boardwalk to reach the deck. Tree roots protrude in places, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Early morning viewing during peak autumn foliage season requires advance reservation and a cooperation fee, so check official information if you're aiming for that. Evenings are cool and insects emerge, so bring a jacket and insect repellent for peace of mind.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Evening hours when the wind is likely to calm are more apt to create a water mirror and are ideal for concluding the day.
