A spectacular marsh reflecting the Hakkoda peaks on its water surface—an unbelievable view right beside the road
About this spot
A small marsh beside National Route 103 that boasts what is said to be the finest Hakkoda vista. Its name comes from Hiji, a water lily (genus Nymphaea) that floats on the surface, displaying delicate white blossoms from early to mid-summer. From the wooden boardwalk observation deck, the peaks of Hakkoda—including Takada-dake, Ko-dake, and Yohaiko-dake—are reflected in the marsh waters in an almost painterly scene. During calm moments, a spectacular "upside-down Hakkoda" appears, and photographers can be seen quietly standing with tripods, waiting for the perfect moment to capture it. The surrounding area is wetland where seasonal plants such as skunk cabbage and cotton grass can be observed. It's a breathtaking spot that one would hardly imagine could exist just steps away from the car.
Tips
About 15 minutes by car from Jogakura Arched Bridge, located along National Route 103. The roadside parking spaces are limited, so please yield to others during busy periods. Viewing is from the wooden deck boardwalk right off the road; please do not step off the boardwalk to protect the wetland. The water mirror is more likely to appear during times when the wind is calm.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 45 minutes. Aiming for times when the wind calms down offers a chance to encounter the "upside-down Hakkoda."
