The Distinctive Octagonal Twin Towers—Visit the Meiji-Era Western Library Free of Charge
About this spot
A three-story wooden building in Renaissance style with octagonal twin towers, standing at one corner of Ōtemom Square (追手門広場). Built in the Meiji period by master carpenters including Horiie Sakichi (堀江佐吉) of Hirosaki, it long served as the city library beloved by residents. Its charming appearance with pale exterior walls and red dome roof represents the representative history of Hirosaki developing as a "town of Western buildings" after the Meiji era. Inside, the original reading rooms are recreated and can be viewed free of charge. Neighboring is the Former Tōa Gijuku Foreign Teacher's Residence (旧東奥義塾外人教師館), and in the square are miniature replicas of notable city buildings at 1/10 scale, allowing you to experience a taste of Western building tours in a compact way. This retro, photogenic spot sparks conversation between grandparents who knew the old library and their grandchildren.
Tips
Located inside Ōtemom Square, just across the street from Ōtemom Gate of Hirosaki Park. Admission is free. The internal stairs are somewhat steep, so watch your footing when going up and down. The adjacent former Tōa Gijuku Foreign Teacher's Residence has a tearoom where you can rest if tired. There are many dining spots in the surrounding area, making it convenient for a visit spanning lunch.
Best time to visit
Takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Stopping by in the early afternoon after lunch allows for a smooth transition to Fujita Memorial Garden.
