Enjoy contemporary art at a brick warehouse art museum with a glittering cider-gold roof

About this spot

Originally built as a sake brewery during the Meiji and Taisho periods, this brick warehouse later became the first site of large-scale cider production in Japan. It has been restored as a museum, preserving nearly its original appearance. The striking titanium roof glimmers in "Cider Gold," a color inspired by cider itself, and the interplay between the brick walls and contemporary art makes every angle a picturesque scene. One catalyst for the museum's creation was a past exhibition by Hirosaki-born artist Yoshitomo Nara held in this warehouse. Exhibitions change several times a year, so each visit offers fresh discoveries. The adjacent café and shop section showcases cider made from Hirosaki apples and sweets, allowing you to experience both art and apple culture in one place.

Tips

Located in the Yoshino-cho Ryokuchi area on the way to Hirosaki Park, about a 20-minute walk from JR Hirosaki Station. The museum is typically closed on Tuesdays; fees and exhibition periods vary, so check the official website in advance. The café and shop section can be accessed without purchasing a museum ticket, making it convenient for lunch.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1.5 hours. Entering before lunch and enjoying lunch at the adjacent café afterward is an efficient plan.
