Aomori Prefecture's largest lake and a brackish lake where seawater and freshwater mix. Blessed with abundant aquatic life including Yamato clams, pond smelt, and silver-striped Japanese smelt, it has been cherished locally as the "treasure lake." Parks are developed along the Misawa side of the lakeshore, and you can walk down to the sandy beach at water's edge, allowing you to spend a relaxing time with small children searching for shells and pebbles. The most spectacular sight is at dusk. The vast, unobstructed lake surface glows crimson, and the setting sun traces a shimmering path of light across the water. Tips
About 15 minutes by car from downtown Misawa. The lakeshore is often windy, so a jacket is recommended. The ground becomes dark after sunset, so finish your walk while there is still daylight. Insect repellent is helpful in summer.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Just before sunset, when the lake surface glows crimson, is the absolute best time.
