Every Sunday at dawn, approximately 300 shops line up along Tanabaski Wharf in Hachinohe Harbor, creating what is said to be one of Japan's largest morning markets. Along the roughly 800-meter wharf, shops selling fresh fish, vegetables, prepared foods, and miscellaneous items stretch in a line, offering street food treasures from grilled squid and senbei-jiru to freshly-fried donuts and the market's famous coffee. It starts at daybreak and many vendors shut down by late morning when the sun gets high, so rising early is essential for morning market enthusiasts. The friendly interactions with vendors and the openness of eating while watching fishing boats moored in the harbor is an experience found nowhere else. When friends scatter to different stalls and pool their finds, the wharf instantly transforms into an oversized breakfast venue.
Tips
Open weekends from mid-March to December, every Sunday from dawn until around 9 a.m. A Sunday-only shuttle bus 'Isaba-go' runs from the Moto-Hachinohe Station area, and free parking is available, though traffic is heavy around 8 a.m., so arriving early is recommended. Most stalls accept cash only, so bring plenty of small change. The sea breeze in the morning is cold, so a light layer is comfortable even in summer.
Best time to visit
Plan for about 1 hour 15 minutes. The best time is between 6 and 8 a.m. when all shops are open and energy is at its peak. After 9 a.m., shops begin closing.
