Founded by the Great Master Genkaku Enin in 862 (Jogan 4), this is one of Japan's three most sacred places, alongside Mount Hiei and Mount Koya. The temple grounds spread along the shores of Lake Usori, a caldera lake, presenting a striking contrast between the desolate, rocky "Hell Circuit" where sulfur smoke rises and the "Paradise Beach" where white sand reflects the emerald lake surface—a landscape that embodies both the hell and paradise of the afterlife. Pinwheels that spin in the wind are offered at the Sai-no-Kawara (Children's Limbo), and the entire area is wrapped in a unique quietness and sense of prayer. The dignified temple buildings that stretch straight from the main gate to the mountain gate are also impressive to behold, and as a sacred site, it is one of a kind in the landscape one encounters nowhere else. Tips
About 30 minutes by car from Mutsu city via the Osorezan Kaido road. Visitation is only permitted during the open season, typically from May to October, so note that it closes in winter. The air in the temple grounds has a strong sulfur smell and involves walking on rocky terrain, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Have cash ready for the entrance fee.
Best time to visit
Plan for about 1 hour 15 minutes. Early morning, when there are fewer visitors, is recommended to fully savor the peaceful atmosphere of this sacred place.
