The Monument Marking Japan's Northernmost Point and a Giant Tuna Statue, with Hokkaido Visible Across the Strait

About this spot

Located at the northernmost point of Honshu, this is one of the highlights of the Shimokita Peninsula drive. A stone monument inscribed "The Northernmost Point of Honshu" and a colossal tuna monument symbolizing Oma, a town famous for hand-line tuna fishing, stand side by side and have become iconic photo spots. On clear days, the Hokkaido mountain range comes into sharp focus across the Tsugaru Strait, approximately 17.5 km away, and you'll be filled with the realization of having driven all the way to the northern tip of Honshu. The Oma Saki Lighthouse, distinctive with its white and black striped pattern, stands on nearby Benten Island, continuing to watch over ships passing through the strait. The surrounding area is lined with souvenir shops and food stalls, making it a convenient sightseeing hub. Feel the sea breeze and enjoy this northernmost view with your loved one.

Tips

About 1 hour 15 minutes by car north from Osorezan via National Route 279. There is a free parking lot near the stone monument. The cape has few windbreaks and is often windy, so bringing a light jacket is recommended even in summer. On clear days with cleaner air, you can see Hokkaido more distinctly.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 45 minutes. On sunny days during daylight hours, Hokkaido across the Tsugaru Strait is clearly visible.
