Experience the Golden Culture of the Ōshū Fujiwara Clan in the All-Golden Konjikudō and Sankotsuzō Museum

A renowned Tendai Buddhist temple said to have been founded by the Great Teacher Jikaku Ennin in 848 (Kasshō 3). In the early 12th century, Kiyohira, the first-generation lord of the Ōshū Fujiwara clan, had a grand temple complex constructed. The main attraction is the Konjikudō (Golden Hall), completed in 1124 (Tenchi 1), an Amida Hall covered entirely in gold leaf inside and out. The pinnacle of Heian-period craftsmanship is concentrated in its shell inlay work and gold lacquer, and it was designated as Japan's first national treasure as a building. The museum's Sankotsuzō houses numerous cultural properties, including national treasures and important cultural assets, allowing visitors to feel the splendor of the Ōshū Fujiwara clan up close. As you slowly climb the Tsukimi Slope—lined with old cedar trees over 300 years old—the main hall and various buildings appear one after another, enveloping you in the solemn atmosphere befitting the center of the world heritage site of Hiraizumi.
Tips
Tsukimi Slope is about 800 meters uphill. There are benches and tea shops along the way, so take breaks at your grandparents' pace. Using the parking lot near the top of the slope reduces walking distance. The admission ticket is valid for the Konjikudō, Sankotsuzō, and other sites. The temple grounds include gravel paths, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours. In the morning, it's relatively less crowded, and the cedar-lined path looks beautiful in the morning light.
