Overlook the Kitakami River from Where Yoshitsune Met His End; See Bashō's Haiku Stone Monument Too
About this spot
A gently rising hilltop overlooking the Kitakami River, said to be the site of the residence where Yoshitsune met his end. On the hilltop stands Yoshitsune-dō, built by Sendai domain lord Date Tsunamura to honor Yoshitsune's memory, and inside is enshrined a wooden statue of Yoshitsune. Below flows the Kitakami River in gentle meanders, with Mount Tsukashina across the way. Known as Hiraizumi's finest viewpoint, it's also famous as the place where Matsuo Bashō composed his haiku "Summer grass— / all that remains / of warriors' dreams." A stone monument bearing this verse stands in the grounds. Walking here while contemplating the splendor of the Ōshū Fujiwara clan and the Yoshitsune legend, cooled by the river breeze, is a place perfectly suited for a three-generation walk where history's story naturally flows from grandparents to grandchildren.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Chūson-ji Temple, or about 15 minutes on foot. There are a few stone steps from the entrance to the hilltop, so use the railing and take your time. The hilltop has limited shade, so a hat is recommended on sunny days. The view is especially spectacular on clear days with good visibility.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. Mid-afternoon on a bright day is beautiful, as the Kitakami River's surface shimmers.
