Leisurely admire the nationally designated scenic gorge with emerald-green waters and odd rock formations from the walking path
About this spot
A nationally designated scenic spot and natural monument spanning approximately 2 km, shaped by the Banei River—sourced from Mount Kurikoma—carving through rock over long periods. Rough rock formations, potholes, waterfalls, and deep pools succeed one another in dazzling contrast with the emerald-green flowing water. The Sendai clan lord Date Masamune is said to have admired this very landscape. A well-maintained walking path runs alongside the gorge, and the views from Tenkou Bridge (天工橋) and Goran-ba Bridge (御覧場橋) are truly spectacular. The upper reaches display vigorous rapids while the lower sections offer calm, deep pools—a striking contrast worth comparing by crossing the bridges. The adjustable walking distance and pace make it easy for three generations from small children to grandparents to enjoy without strain.
Tips
About 20 minutes by route bus from JR Ichinokoseki Station toward Genbikei Gorge, or about 10 minutes by car from Ichinoseki IC, with parking available nearby. While the walking path is well-maintained, some sections allow close approach to rocky areas, so keep an eye on children. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Daytime visits during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons are crowded; early morning offers peaceful walking.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Morning is recommended when the water color looks most beautiful in natural light. Spring greenery and autumn foliage seasons are especially spectacular.
