Savor the famous 'flying dango' Kakokyoya dumplings while viewing the gorge

About this spot

The shop famous nationwide for Genbikei Gorge's signature 'flying dango,' the Kakokyoya dumplings. From the pavilion on the opposite bank, place payment in a basket and tap the wooden mallet on a wooden board; the basket will glide along a rope strung across the gorge, delivering dumplings and tea, then descend again—a delightfully unique mechanism. The dumplings feature three types on a skewer—sweet bean, sesame, and mitarashi—and their freshly made softness with refined, unpretentious sweetness appeals to all ages. Waiting for the basket to 'fly' across the gorge from the rocks overlooking the valley creates unforgettable memories for both children and grandparents. A highlight of Genbikei Gorge sightseeing where gorge beauty and confectionery are experienced together.

Tips

The pickup location for flying dango is the pavilion on the opposite side of Genbikei Gorge, and payment goes into the basket, so have small change or a 1,000-yen bill ready. Due to popularity, expect waits during peak seasons. Operations depend on season and weather, with dumplings sold until sellout, so visiting early in the morning ensures availability.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required. Early morning before sellout is certain. Perfect as a rest break after gorge walking.
