A museum adjacent to the former Tōhoku Crushed Stone Works factory, where the poet and fairy tale writer Kenji Miyazawa (宮沢賢治) worked as an engineer in his later years in Higashiyama. From 1931 onward, Miyazawa was involved with the area's crushed stone factory and traveled extensively promoting limestone sales. The museum displays mineral and rock specimens alongside the footprints of engineer Kenji and his correspondence, allowing you to understand the later life of Kenji—a period overlapping when his notebook "Never Yielding to the Rain" (雨ニモマケズ) was written—from a multifaceted perspective through the theme of stone. The adjacent former Tōhoku Crushed Stone Works is a nationally registered tangible cultural property, and the factory buildings with remaining machinery are worth seeing. When you visit after experiencing the limestone landscape at Geibikei Gorge and Yūgenkyū Cave, the connection between Higashiyama and Kenji falls naturally into place—a museum that weaves the story of your journey together.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Yūgenkyū Cave (幽玄洞), with free parking. The exhibition is not overwhelming; you can see everything leisurely in about an hour. There are closures (year-end/new year, etc.), so confirm opening dates before visiting for peace of mind. If you plan to eat lunch en route to Ichinoseki city center, use dining options in the Higashiyama area or in the city.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Around midday, you can view exhibits relatively quietly and thoroughly.
