Founded in 1912 (Taisho 7), this Ichinoseki brewery retains its historic character, with large sake storage buildings designated as nationally registered tangible cultural properties. The grounds feature a brewery for the sake "Seiki-no-Ichi," a craft beer brewery for "Iwate Kura Beer," a folk culture museum of sake, and a restaurant and shop housed in renovated breweries—all the charms of a brewery town can be enjoyed in one location. The courtyard surrounded by stone warehouses with heavy beams and white walls is picturesque just to walk through. The brewery shop offers an embarrassment of riches in choosing among local sake, beer, and sweets made with sake lees. True to Ichinoseki's mochi culture, the brewery restaurant also serves traditional mochi dishes. A perfect spot for a sophisticated, relaxed afternoon—a striking contrast to the morning's boats and caves.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk from Ichinoseki Station; about 30 minutes by car from the Geibikei area, with free parking. The folk culture museum of sake requires admission; strolling the grounds is free. To enjoy tastings, have the non-driving partner taste, or enjoy non-alcoholic craft beer options and souvenir shopping. Restaurant lunch hours are limited; if you want to enjoy mochi dishes, confirm hours in advance.
