Challenge Kappa Fishing with Cucumber Bait in the Stream Behind Jokenji Temple
About this spot
A legendary kappa site that appears in 'Tales of Tono', located in a small stream flowing behind Jokenji Temple in Tsuchimure Town. Clear water winds slowly beneath a dense canopy of trees, creating an atmosphere where a kappa might emerge at any moment. Along the riverbank are fishing rods baited with cucumber waiting for you to attempt kappa fishing. The Tono way is playful—you need a 'Kappa Capture Permit' to seriously succeed. A small shrine dedicated to kappas sits nearby, and at Jokenji Temple itself, a uniquely charming 'kappa guardian statue' with a plate-shaped head greets you. Taking photos with friends while dangling your fishing rod here is guaranteed to be the highlight scene of this course.
Tips
About a 5-minute walk from Densho-en Heritage Park. Since there's no dedicated parking, the custom is to park at Densho-en and walk. Kappa Capture Permits can be purchased at Densho-en or Tabi no Kura near Tono Station. The riverbank can be muddy, so wear sturdy, easy-to-walk-in shoes. Since it's near water, bring insect repellent during summer.
Best time to visit
Plan for about 45 minutes. Midday with beautiful dappled sunlight is recommended. The atmosphere is especially perfect during seasons with lush greenery.
