Be Awed by the Important Cultural Property Curved Farmhouse and Thousand Oshirasama Statues
About this spot
A facility recreating the traditional life of farmers in the Tono region, typically visited as a pair with Kappa Fuchi. Within the park, the Important Cultural Property Nanbu Curved Farmhouse—the former Kikuchi Residence—has been relocated, and from the irori hearth and horse stalls to the experience of humans and horses sharing one roof, you'll understand the Tono way of life. The crowning achievement is the Oshirasama Shrine (オシラ堂). The space where a thousand Oshirasama statues—the deity of Tono born from a tragic love story between a girl and horse—stand lined up will take your breath away with quiet grandeur. The memorial hall of Sasaki Yoshisaku, who first told these 'Tales of Tono' to Yanagita Kunio, is also here, letting you touch the heart of the folktale homeland. The dining area offers local Tono flavors like hittsumi.
Tips
About a 5-minute walk from Kappa Fuchi, with free parking available. The curved farmhouse requires removing shoes, so easy-to-slip-on footwear is convenient. At the Oshirasama Shrine, you can participate in a paid blessing experience where you write wishes on cloth and dress the statues. Kappa Capture Permits can also be purchased here.
Best time to visit
Plan for about 70 minutes. Visit in the afternoon together with Kappa Fuchi. The light from the irori hearth pairs beautifully with the soft afternoon sunlight.
