A facility that relocates curved farmhouses built from the Edo period through the Meiji era and recreates the entire traditional Tono mountain village with water wheels and paddies intact. The landscape of thatched roofs scattered through a valley is photogenic from any angle, which explains why it has been chosen repeatedly as a filming location for television dramas and movies. Village guides called 'maburitt (protectors)' welcome you at the irori hearth and warmly share stories of how people lived in the old mountain village. The early evening when the setting sun gently bathes the thatched roofs and field paths is the most photogenic time of day. As a finale to your folktale journey, leisurely stroll through the very landscape where these stories were born.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from Kappa Fuchi and Densho-en, nestled in the mountains of Tsugmashi Town. The grounds are hilly, and a full loop involves more walking than expected, so wear comfortable shoes. Closing times vary by season, so check the final entry time in advance. The gift shop sells Tono specialty items and folk crafts.
Best time to visit
Plan for about 75 minutes. Evening when the setting sun dyes the thatched roofs is particularly beautiful. Be sure to check the closing time.
