A museum preserving the history of Kamaishi, the birthplace of modern iron smelting in Japan, perched on a highland overlooking Kamaishi Bay near the Daikannon. The centerpiece is an immersive theater featuring a life-size recreation of the Western-style blast furnace from the Hashino Iron Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage component asset of "Industrial Heritage of Meiji-Era Japan." Through powerful visuals and sound, you'll experience the momentous story of Takayuki Oshima's success in achieving Japan's first continuous pig-iron production using a Western blast furnace. The museum is filled with exhibits explaining iron-smelting processes and the life of this iron town—a treasure trove for history enthusiasts. Tips

Close to the Daikannon, visiting both together is the standard route. Note that the museum is closed Tuesdays; enter at least one hour before closing. Timing your visit to coincide with a theater showing deepens understanding. Being on a hilltop, driving is convenient.
