Walk Through the Pine Forest to Admire the Scenic Ranpoku Valley and Kaminari Rock, a Nationally Designated Scenic Spot and Natural Monument
About this spot
Located at the southeastern tip of the Misaki Peninsula in Ofunato City, this renowned coastal landscape spans approximately 6 km and is designated as a National Scenic Spot and Natural Monument representative of the Sanriku coast. The name comes from Goishi Beach (碁石浜), where black pebbles polished smooth by waves like go stones are densely scattered. As you proceed along the pine forest pathway, you'll encounter dramatic natural formations one after another—the sheer cliffs facing each other across Ranpoku Valley (乱曝谷) and Kaminari Rock (雷岩), where waves crashing into the cavern resound like thunder. The sound of Kaminari Rock's waves is selected as one of "100 Sounds of Japan Worth Preserving," making this a place to enjoy with both eyes and ears. With an information center and rest house on site, and the option to adjust your walking distance to your fitness level, even grandparents and grandchildren can fully enjoy the spectacular Sanriku scenery without strain.
Tips
About 15 minutes by car from the Ofunato Goishi Kaigan IC on the Sanriku Coastal Expressway. The park has a free parking lot. The pathway has ups and downs and stairs, so wear comfortable walking shoes. View from inside the railings at observation points and don't take your eyes off children. A light jacket is recommended on windy days.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. The sea's blue is richest in the clear morning air, and the pathway walk is most comfortable then.
