Next stop: Free Admission: Three Generations Learn About the Tsunami's Lessons and the Path to RecoveryAbout this spot
At Takata Matsubara (高田松原), once a scenic spot of white sand and green pines with approximately 70,000 trees, stood a single pine that survived the Great East Japan Earthquake tsunami. Preserved as a symbol of hope for recovery, it continues to stand with noble posture, approximately 27 meters tall, against the sea. The surrounding area is developed as Takata Matsubara Tsunami Recovery Memorial Park, and you can walk at leisure along a flat pathway from the parking lot to stand close before it. As you gaze at the gentle Hirota Bay beyond the seawall alongside the lone pine, both the harshness of nature and human resilience quietly touch your heart. This emotionally resonant highlight of your Sanriku drive is a place where stories worth passing from grandparents to grandchildren naturally emerge.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from the Rikuzen-Takata IC on the Sanriku Coastal Expressway. Use the free parking lot at Michi-no-Eki Takata Matsubara. The flat pathway from the parking lot to the pine takes about 10 minutes one way. There's little shade, so bring a hat and water. Rest on benches and walk at a pace comfortable for grandparents.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. The soft afternoon light avoids backlighting, allowing for quiet contemplation.
