Leisurely Family Stroll Along a 2km Cherry Tree-lined Path Beside the Kitakami River
About this spot
Counted as one of the "Three Great Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites of Michinoku" alongside Hirosaki Park in Aomori and Kakunodate in Akita, this is Kitakami's representative park. A cherished cherry blossom destination since its opening in the Taisho era, the park features a 2km cherry tree-lined walking path along the eastern bank of the Kitakami River, with some 10,000 cherry trees planted throughout the entire grounds. Beyond the spectacular cherry blossoms, the riverside strolls are equally pleasant during new green and autumn foliage seasons. The flat walking path is easy to navigate even with a stroller—a real plus for families with children. Scattered throughout the spacious park are lawns and rest shelters where you can relax in the river breeze. The scenery created by the river and tree-lined path is photogenic in every season, perfect for family photos.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from JR Kitakami Station, or about 15 minutes from the Tohoku Expressway Kitakami-Ekoriishishi IC. The park has free parking (paid and crowded during cherry blossom festival season). The walking path is flat and stroller-friendly. Since it's breezy along the river, bringing an extra layer for your child is reassuring in early spring or autumn.
Best time to visit
Allow about 2 hours. Morning is recommended when there are fewer crowds and the light is beautiful. Cherry blossoms typically peak from mid- to late April.
