A temple nestled beside Zuiganji, the memorial temple of Mitsumune, the eldest grandson of Date Masamune. The Sankeidan mausoleum is a National Important Cultural Property, and its decorative doors feature designs depicting roses and crosses believed to have been brought back from the West by Hasekura Tsunenaga, giving rise to the temple's affectionate nickname as the "Rose Temple." The grounds showcase moss-covered stone gardens and ponds arranged in a heart-shaped design, and simply sitting on the veranda gazing at them feels restorative. Beaded prayer necklace crafting, where visitors select natural stones to create their own, is popular, and the time grandparents and grandchildren spend choosing stones together becomes a cherished travel memory. Unlike Zuiganji's grandeur, Entsuuin offers an intimate, refined beauty in a more modest scale. It's an ideal place to rest weary feet in the afternoon while spending quiet time in a serene garden.

Tips

Located just beside Zuiganji Temple with only a short walk between them. The garden paths feature gravel and stone paving, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Beaded prayer necklace crafting is available through same-day registration and takes about 30 minutes, so allow extra time if interested. With verandas and seating areas, it's well-suited for grandparents to rest.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. The soft afternoon light beautifully illuminates the moss garden. Especially beautiful during spring greenery and autumn foliage seasons.
