An ancient temple believed to have been founded in the 5th year of Tenchō (826) by the Great Master Chishaku Daishi Ennin, and later rebuilt by Date Masamune over five years as the finest Zen temple in Ōshū. The main hall and storehouse are designated as National Treasures, and the interior displays the height of Momoyama-style elegance through screen paintings and elaborate wooden transom carvings that take the breath away. The interior, permeated with the spirit of venerating Date Masamune's memorial, naturally draws out explanations from history-loving grandparents. Along the approach path from the main gate to the main hall, clusters of cave ruins where monks trained form a sacred landscape amid towering cedars. The contrast between the lively seaside atmosphere and the quiet world just beyond is uniquely Matsushima. A leisurely walk allows all three generations to savor the profound depth of Date culture.

Tips

About a 5-minute walk from Godaido Hall. Purchase admission tickets at the reception near the main gate. Visitors remove shoes before entering the main hall, so convenient slip-on shoes are helpful. The approach is flat and easy to walk, though viewing the main hall thoroughly takes about an hour, so allow ample time. The adjacent Treasure Museum "Seiryuden" is also accessible with the admission ticket.
