Explore the true image of Lord Masamune through armor and artifacts related to the Date family

About this spot

A museum located at the Sanomaru (third enclosure) of Sendai Castle, specializing in Sendai's history and culture. With approximately 100,000 items in its collection centered on artifacts donated by the Date family, visitors can appreciate suits of armor and campaign garments worn by Lord Masamune and other treasures associated with the Date clan familiar from historical dramas. The relics brought back by Hasekura Tsunenaga, envoy of the Keicho Diplomatic Mission to Europe, are designated as National Treasures and registered as UNESCO 'Memory of the World,' making them an invaluable collection. The experience of witnessing firsthand the ambitious undertaking of Lord Masamune dispatching envoys to Spain and Rome is unique to this museum. The exhibitions comprehensively cover politics, daily life, and culture of the Sendai domain, adding depth from an educational perspective to the world of Zuihoden visited in the morning. The museum's location surrounded by greenery of the castle's former third enclosure, with its pleasant garden strolls, makes it a sophisticated destination for adults.

Get off at 'Sendai City Museum/International Center-mae' on Loople Sendai. Closed Mondays (subject to change if a holiday), so confirm opening dates before visiting.
