Pay respects at the magnificently ornate Momoyama-style mausoleum where Lord Masamune rests

The mausoleum of Sendai domain founder Lord Masamune, constructed at Kyogamine (経ヶ峯) according to Lord Masamune's will. This building, which embodies the finest aesthetics of Momoyama style, is resplendent with lacquered surfaces, brilliantly colored carvings, and gleaming decorative metal fittings. After being destroyed during wartime firebombing, it was reconstructed, and details such as dragon-head roof tiles and lion-head ornaments have been restored to their original appearance. The rows of centuries-old cryptomeria trees lining both sides of the approach create an unexpected serenity within Sendai city proper, and as you ascend the stone steps one by one, the solemn atmosphere deepens. The adjacent museum displays restored facial features of Lord Masamune reconstructed from his remains discovered during excavation, as well as burial items. The grounds also feature the Kansenden (感仙殿) mausoleum of the second lord Tadamune and the Zenoden (善応殿) mausoleum of the third lord Tsunamune, allowing visitors to tour the three mausoleums of the Date clan leaders at once. A sacred site worthy of marking the beginning of a day devoted to tracing Lord Masamune's life.
Tips
From Sendai Station, take the Loople Sendai sightseeing bus and get off at 'Zuihoden-mae,' then walk about 5 minutes. If moving by bus throughout the day, a one-day pass for Loople Sendai is a great value. The approach features steep stone steps, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The museum displays are also well worth seeing, so allow ample time for your visit.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. The early morning right after opening is uncrowded, and the morning light filtering through the cryptomeria trees is mystical.
